1. Summary
If there is one undisputable theme today in enterprise IT, it’s that of constant change. From the underlying shift toward cloud computing to the rapid adoption of consumerinfluenced computing devices, outside the early 80s (desktop PC and networking) andthe mid-90s (Internet), there hasn’t been a time of such rapid and large-scale shifts in core business technologies.
One of the biggest areas of change in the past five years has been around the tidal wave of mobile in enterprise computing. After the first waves of enterprise mobility were ushered in by the BlackBerry, the iPhone has become both a consumer- and a businesscomputing force, in large part due to the wide support of key business communications technologies (such as Microsoft Exchange Server) as well what many consider critical business services (such as Salesforce.com and Dropbox).
And while the smartphone may have led the first big sea of mobile-computing devices, an even bigger ocean of change in the form of tablets is already altering some industries, such as retail, health care and the industrial sector, in a significant way.
This report looks at a survey conducted by GigaOM Pro of 304 IT decision makers in enterprise businesses. The survey was conducted in Feb. 2012 and included IT decision makers among businesses of over 500 employees in size. We consider small enterprises to have 500–999 employees, medium-size enterprises to have 1,000–1,499 employees, and large enterprises to have 1,500-plus employees. The survey covered such topics as cloud computing, big data and enterprise mobility. This snapshot report examines responses to questions about enterprise mobile computing.
