1. Summary

Gigaom Research CloudTracker is published every quarter to analyze the latest trends from the cloud computing market. It includes the latest updates from key players, mergers & acquisitions, executive transitions, and funding news with analysis and commentary.

With HP acquiring Eucalyptus, Cisco buying MetaCloud, Red Hat acquiring FeedHenry, and Ericsson investing in Apcera, consolidation hit the cloud market in the third quarter of 2014.

Containers and clustering technologies continue to dominate with Docker receiving $40 million in funding. VMware bit the bullet by joining the container bandwagon through its partnership with Docker and Google. It also dominated the headlines with its announcements from VMware 2014.

Microsoft is inching closer to Amazon by expanding its services. Azure got search and machine language services this quarter. Amazon continued to innovate with the addition of Cognito and Zocalo services.

This report is a companion to our Third Quarter Analysis and Outlook reports in Cloud, which features deeper analysis of OpenStack’s market uptake, HP’s purchase of Eucalyptus, AWS’s launch of Zocalo, and Vermont’s efforts to tax the cloud; and Big Data and Analytics, which includes a review of new Apache projects, data discovery vendors big Q3 market push, and major vendors making moves into big data.
